So, here’s the truth… I’ve never seen Hamilton or even heard any of the music. Is that shocking? I plan on getting around to it eventually, but it’s taken a back burner to other stories and music. Anyway, when I was sent a copy of Melissa de la Cruz’s newest novel about Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler, I wasn’t sure I would enjoy it without being in on the Hamilton craze. However, I was pleased to find that Alex & Eliza: A Love Story was a sweet and clean romance that appeals to anyone who likes historical fiction.
The book follows Alex and Eliza’s relationship from the night they meet until their marriage several years later. It wasn’t the typical romance. Eliza was originally courted by someone else and looked down on Alex for delivering bad news to her family. As time went on, he wore her down and won her over. They then came to have a loving and strong relationship.
The book wasn’t deep and moving, but it was sweet and funny. Everyone needs a fluffy story now and then. If you love period romances, you’ll fully enjoy this story. It’s perfect for young adults and grownups alike with no sex or adult language. Overall, I’d rate it a 3.5 as a fun novel with an interesting historical bent.
